The ask
Create an intuitive connected experience for the Dyson Lightcyle™, one of many products on the Dyson app eco system.
What is the Lightcycle?
A desktop light that intelligently adjusts for your time of day, age and task.
It tracks, senses and personalises light warmth and brightness based on your location.
It calculates the color temperature and brightness of your daylight, every 60 seconds. Giving you the right light for the time of day.

The approach
This was taken from a presentation which distills the key USP of the Lightcycle.
The Dyson Lightcycle was Jake Dyson's foray into intelligent lighting systems.
The why
The products USP is that our wellbeing is proven to relate to a biological rhythm that it is synchronised with the Earth’s revolutions and therefore sunlight.
Hall, Young and Rosbash proved that there are molecular mechanisms inside us controlling the circadian rhythm.
The challenge was to design an app that seamlessly connected to the light itself, and provide a clear and simple mental model of this insight and its benefit.
Our 'boiler plate' condensed down to this.
... and these two fundamentals were our north star for the UX.
Discovery. There are many light and weather related apps in the world... most of which are not scientifically accurate or indeed right.
Our approach had to prove the science yet be easy to use and it's benefit very clear.

Understanding time, sunlight and the earth's orbit!
Understanding light and time. How to marry what is outside to the lamp inside.
Exploring mental models of how the sun rises and sets and its impact on light.
Distilling 3x options, with pros, cons and the 'clear bin moment'. The metaphor that derived from the cyclone vacuum technology which housed a clear bin. The idea that for any solution it's immediately obvious what the benefit of the product is.
